Hello folks!

Happy Winter from New Zealand!

We had some horrendous weather over a week ago which resulted in our skifields being graced with wonderful fresh snows and sent out farmers out to rescue their stock from high fields and countrysides. It also meant that I was stuck inside while it rained, hailed and sleeted up a storm. Since then it has been absolutely cracker weather which has resulted in outings finally!

Since we don't have anymore sled dog events coming up, Ma has got me practising my hearing and listening with weightpull. We got a lovely new harness from Nordkyn and Ma had to get it fitting just right, so we had a little puddle around in the weekend. The weight I am dragging is only about 25-30kg. Ma has two packaged up originally but when she attached me to that it was rather hard to drag... so one weight and sliding on the ground was just hard enough! Especially for a first practise.

Here I am having a thought as to why I should be pulling this wrapped up package behind me.. seems like a pointless exercise.. whats an MD to do?

So I did what an MD does best. Argue with the authority...

And talked back some more...

This clearly wasn't working, Ma made me pull this cumbersome thing for about 671258 miles (note from Ma: It was only about 20 metres all up...). The cheek of it.

Fine, Ma you win!! I'll blimming well just do it then!

OK. So maybe it wasn't that hard. But for dogness sakes WHY! If she wants the darn thing moved across the grass she can blimming well do it herself next time. (Note from Ma: YAY he hasn't lost his labrattention span, yet)

The competition for weightpull is in September and Ma says we only have to do this a little bit every couple of weeks just so I get back into the listening thing. She said that it was a bit embarassing last time when I nearly didn't pull until the time was up each time. I knew what I was doing... just wanted to create a bit of tension...

Hope everyone else is chugging along well and goodly and enjoying their summer or wintertime!

Cool beans

Return of the MD

I am back, its been a while and I am going to try and catch up with all of you properly this time and convince Ma to help me more often so that we can all keep in touch.

It would be fair to day a few things have happened since I last updated all my faithful followers and furiends! Perhaps I will sum it up in a little poetic text...

Biking and walking and running and scooting
Eating and treating and snoozing and schmoozing
The big car blew up and we were a bit stuck
But at least we were not far from our friends (so we didn't need a tow truck...)

They rescued us quick and we borrowed a car
Our plans all but changed cos we couldn't go far
Ma parted with monies and bought us some wheels
But theres not much room for sleeping and meals
So we can't go to lots of races
Because theres ice and snow in lots of places
And the wee car we have now is a sporty wee ride
But lacks that faithful little four wheel drive

Ma has been lazy and neglecting me
And I have been refusing to run
But when Ma decided to get the scooter out again
I am pulling like I'm being shot with a gun

We have races in two weeks
And more late in June
I've been running fantastic (as long as its dark, the daytime runs have been pretty miserable...)
And acting like a loon

I'm exhausted from a busy weekend
Assisting the humans mend trails

But hence, they look fantastic now
And ready for dog barks and wails

I'm catching up with all my furiends
With Ma assisting me to type
Its a big job to visit you all
And see whats been happening and ripe

Please bear with me while I see to you all
And make sure that all my friends are well
I've missed out on months of happenings
But I'm sure all your bloggies will tell.

Best wishes
Koda MD

Hello pals

Do you see anything wrong with this picture? Aparently Ma was quite miffed about something about 5 minutes after cutting the lawn very very short....

Yes you are correct. Poofields mean Poofields. Hence the poo...

Happy Trails!

Actual adventure

Greetings puppies and kitties!

In my previous post, I shared with you the pathetic Niagara Falls. That wasn't what Ma went to see without me, but was a mere side trip on the way home.

Ma was off to visit Curio Bay which is in The Catlins, a very scenic part of New Zealand. It was a beautiful day and a good drive to test out the new Kodamobile.

She didn't see any whales or dolphins or penguins.
But she did see this little cutie:

She couldn't remember her name but she was a rottweiler cross. Very cute, Ma stopped by and asked if she could cuddle her.
Wish she'd brought her home for me.
Oh, and they saw this creature:
The sea lion was sunbaking on the side of the driveway and had lots of people stopping to take photos of it.
I think I'd be scared of that.

Niagara Falls = Pathetic

Hello Pals

My appearances have been sparse and far between but I assure you I am ok. Ma has been busy working and eating and biking so hasn't had much time to type blog posts for me, I'm not sure where her priorities are at the moment!

I dug up some photos from January, Ma and TeamHusky's Mummy went for an adventure without the doggies. I was left at home to sunbake in my poofields which wasn't too bad.

She said she went and visited the New Zealand version of Niagara Falls. I thought they were meant to be marvellous and extreme and amazing.

See - here is the sign:

And here is the lovely illustration slash photo:

They looked nothing like the photo. They were abysmal, pathetic and a downright let down. Ma said it was lucky she didn't drive there specifically to see them as she would've been very disappointed.

See, looks nothing like the advertising photo at all.

Never believe what you see in advertisements BOL.

Christchurch Earthquake

Hello pals

Following on from September 4ths 7.1 earthquake near Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand, they were hit with a big aftershock yesterday afternoon at 12.51pm measuring 6.3 on the richter scale.

Because this earthquake was centred very close to the city and only 5km deep it has caused devastation mainly to the CBD of Christchurch City with damaged/collapsed buildings, rockfalls, sink holes, liquifaction (water/mud spewing out of the ground). Many people are missing, some are trapped and others are injured or dead.

Yesterday is said to be "New Zealands Darkest Day" and I would have to agree. Reports are all over the news in New Zealand and also in other parts of the world.

If you want to find out more, there is info galore on these websites:

We have been following the regular updates on the Herald site and watching the news on TV but we cannot begin to imagine the devastation of being there and it doesn't seem real from 570kms away. All our thoughts are with the people and animals in Christchurch.

I'm not dead

Hello friends

I am ok! I am not missing or awol. I haven't joined a cult or skipped away to join the circus!

We have had a busy few weeks and blogging has been shoved to the side for the moment. I have not been able to post because I rely on Ma's svelte fingers to type for me and have been quite lazy in commenting on your posts - but I have been skimming through and catching up on the news when I can.

I have also been doing a fair amount of this:

My itches have been pretty good of late and I havent been inflamed like a beetroot for a while, just a scattering of habitual scratching. Ma reckons the antifungal medicines I was fed last September have eradicated most of the problems I was having which my previous vet had not detected. Lately I have just had some mucky ears which are easily fixed with a cleanout and some treatment goo squirted in my ears.

Oh, and I've been doing a bit of this too....

I'll be back - Arnold Whats-His-Name

Schnoz update

I'm going to look like Scarface Claw for the rest of my life!

28 January 2011

Sore Schnoz

Hello pals

I am feeling a little sad because I have a very sore nose.

On Sunday I was attacked and just about left for dead. Ma tells me it may have been my fault because I got in another dogs face while he was very excited and didn't mind my manners and introduce myself nicely. I beg to differ.

My nose hurts.

My attacker was a fellow black dog, labrador crossed with something, you know the drill. Having something else with the olde faithful lab genes seems to induce serious wickedness. I can tell you, my attacker looked like this, if not worse and more scary:

No wonder I'm the one with the cut nose!
Note from Ma: Koda is being rather pathetic about the whole ideal... the cuts are 99% healed and are about the size of a grain of rice. They were mostly healed by Monday morning... Some extra scars have shown up now the fur has fallen away but these will hopefully fade.
I disagree. I am still in pain and going to have bright, jagged scars covering my nose for ever.
If you don't know already I am very bad for having white fur grow where I get skin injuries. This is why I have a white circle of white on my face where a whisker got infected and fell out, so where the scab was is now white, as is the place where they injected me when I got de-nutted and also on my tail where I had a hot spot, it has grown in all salt-and-peppery.
Ma says I'm one of a kind.
I'm going to interpret that in a good way...

Hello Pups and Kittehs

We are enjoying some lovely sunny weather here in New Zealand at the moment. It is spectacular to bake in however I have found that my black fur is not always practical.

I have had a few parcels arrive in the last week or so and they have been very useful!

Firstly, my Torus waterbowl arrived, I have tried Team Husky's one and I find that even if I drink drink drink, the bowl does not empty. Ma chose a grey one cos she reckons that if there isn't some neutrality within my "stuff" she might go a bit blahblah at all the colours. Ma reckons that if I was thirsty I could probably drink the whole lot in one go. How kind of the bowl to refill for me.

I got my new weightpull harness from Nordkyn in USA. It is very nice cos Ma chose a good green one so I don't feel like too much of a twit in it. It has lovely fleece padding and is a perfect fit. However, if shes going to put it on me I expect that we do something with it instead of having a photo shoot then putting it back on the hook. Pfft!

Note: Pathetic, pleading expression.

I got this new bed! I didn't like it at first but we have bonded nicely. Ma says that I can have it in the lounge for now and when we go away to sleddoggery events over the winter months it will be in the back of the new Kodamobile along with my fleecy blankies. That way I will be warm and comfy so no excuses for running poorly.

As I said, we have been having cracker weather - sometimes it spectacularly sunny and warm like today, but othertimes it is rainy and miserable. A bit like me really. Nevermind. Ma has been growing tomatoes and carrots and things inside and on the nice sunny days she wrangles them outside so they can get some sun. They end up intruding on my sunbaking but I don't mind too much. In fact - I make sure that no bugs or angry butterfly things land on them.

Anyhow, I hope everyone is enjoying themselves as best as can be, there has been a few snippets of bad and sad news lately but it is important to remain peppy if possible, and remember those that can no longer be with us.

Cracker Dog - Mango Minster Entry!

Many of you regard me as a mild mannered, mature and straight-laced individual. MOST of the time Ma would admit that I am rather boring and mundane, slooping along in life with little inspiration.

This is why I have decided to let rip and enter Mango Minster to prove her wrong. There are many occasions when I flick my well-hidden switcheroo (click here for demonstration) and become a Cracker Dog!

Yes, normally I am a very calm dog. I share my toys with friends:

And tend to sleep a lot:

BUT. Inside I am like a rabid hyena, ready to pounce:
I take out my frustrations on anything:

It is frustration and pent up responsibleness that caused the extensive renovations to the facade on my house:
One cannot be a model citizen at every moment. The snow in September 2010 unleashed some sort of fury within me, ears and all:
I enjoy playing nice with my friends, you know the bouncy wouncy pouncy airy fairy stuff of generic labradors. The problem is... I don't have any boucny wouncy pouncy airy fairy friends to play with hence I seem either avoid at all costs... or turn into some sort of fang crazed demon and inflict serious revolt on my dearest friends, even ones that already have other injuries and are instructed to be on bedrest, they aren't immune to the "thing" that possesses me. It can't be all bad, they always seem to come back for more:

See, here is a perfect example of the calm before the storm, the "thing" has taken over my brain, made my eyes yellow and bared my teeth like some sort of psycho, it is about to strike:

The "thing" roaring to his minions:

OK, so sometimes I do think the "thing" is just a figment of my imagination. Sometime I do things just cos. I cleared this piece of greenery cos the bally told me he needed a dusty place to rest. Hang on, is it normal for tennisballs to hold a conversation? Hmmmmm:

Another example of "thing" takeover, I wonder if Yak is aware that a "thing" may be hiding in his brains too? The only thing is instead of making him act nuts, he becomes a kung fu master:

So dear friends... that is my entry to Mango Minster 2011. My name is Koda and I am a Cracker Dog.
